Central Valley's Shavon John-Brown named Player of the Round with match-winning strike

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Round for Round 6 of the 2024 USL Jägermeister Cup with Central Valley Fuego FC forward Shavon John-Brown named Player of the Round presented by Konami eFootball with his match-winning goal against Spokane.

The 29-year-old Grenada international shined in Central Valley's long-awaited home victory - the first for Central Valley Head Coach Jermaine Jones - against Spokane on Friday, recording the match-winning goal in the 53rd minute. The victory was Central Valley's first across all competitions since defeating UPSL side FC Folsom in the First Round of the 2024 U.S. Open Cup on March 20 - a match in which John-Brown was also responsible for the winning goal.

John-Brown's goal - significant for several reasons - secured Central Valley its first-ever USL Jägermeister Cup victory, its first win across all competitions since March 20, its first home victory since July 15, 2023, its first shutout victory since April 1, 2023 and its first home shutout victory since Sept. 21, 2022. Central Valley's victory against Spokane also confirms Fuego FC has defeated all but one current League One team - Knoxville.

"Coach just told us, all the work we put in, the runs, fighting against each other, going hard all week - it's time we start getting results," said John-Brown. "It was 1-0, but we got the job done, it counts as a win, and we keep moving forward."

John-Brown - who played under then-Assistant Coach Jermaine Jones at NISA's New Amsterdam FC in 2021 - has enjoyed a career resurgence during his first season in Fresno after spending the 2023 campaign with a pair of amateur clubs in the EPSL's New York Pancyprian-Freedoms and the USPL's New York Renegades FC.

"Sometimes it's frustrating that we lose games when you see that you're in the game and you have chances and then you are losing and get punished for it," said Central Valley Head Coach Jermaine Jones. "Today in the back we had [Issa Yaya] who stepped up, we were hard on him in training, you have to pick it up, you have to train. You know the commitment you put into work, his energy lifted everybody. I think in general we deserved to win today."

Following the action of Round 6 of the inaugural USL Jägermeister Cup, nine of 12 teams earned representation on the Team of the Round, and Northern Colorado, Chattanooga and Greenville were the only teams to place multiple starters on the Team of the Round.
