USL League One Team of the Week - Week 24

League One veteran first defender named Player of the Week this season

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 24 of the 2024 regular season with One Knoxville SC defender Jordan Skelton named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after captaining Knoxville to a four-point week with his five blocks.

The 2023 USL League One Defender of the Year finalist and 2023 USL League One All-League First Team selection helped Knoxville remain in contention for a top-four finish with a win against Central Valley and a draw against Madison in Week 24. The 27-year-old Newcastle, England native and One Knox captain led the league with 12 clearances and was tied for the lead with five blocks.

Central Valley lead all clubs with five players across the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench, matching a club record set in Week 8 of the 2022 season. Knoxville, Richmond, Omaha and Greenville also placed multiple representatives across the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench.

COACH - Ilija Ilić, One Knoxville SC: Since taking over as interim head coach on Aug. 15, Ilić has guided Knoxville to a 4-1-5 record across all competitions after picking up four points across a pair of Week 24 matches. With a victory against Central Valley and draw against Madison, Knoxville led all clubs with four points, 2.4 points won above expected and a goal differential above expected goal differential value of 2.18, per American Soccer Analysis.

GK - Bernd Schipmann, Forward Madison FC: Schipmann tallied a clean sheet and two saves against a Knoxville side that had previously been held scoreless only once in league play since July 27. The 30-year-old shot-stopper recorded nine recoveries and registered a goals conceded above expected goals conceded value of -0.26 and a goals added value of 0.34, according to American Soccer Analysis.

D - Bryan Bustamante, Central Valley Fuego FC: Against a pair of teams in the upper half of the table, Bustamante recorded 180 minutes of play to help Fuego FC concede only two goals and tally one victory. The first-year professional and 2023 All-Big West Honorable Mention at California State University, Northridge totaled nine duels won, eight clearances, eight completed long passes, seven recoveries, five blocks, three tackles won, and completed nearly 84% of his passes. Bustamante led all players with a 0.66 interrupting score in Week 24, per American Soccer Analysis.

D - Klaidi Cela, Richmond Kickers: In his fourth consecutive start and fifth appearance for the Kickers since joining the side in August, Cela bagged the winning goal against Chattanooga to help Richmond secure a postseason berth for the first time since 2022. The former Canada youth international and two-time Canadian Premier League champion provided an additional five duels won, five clearances, two blocks and completed nearly 80% of his passes.

D - Nate Shultz, Greenville Triumph SC: Already shaping up to be the next great defender to make his mark in the Upstate, Shultz was stellar despite conceding a loss to Central Valley. The 28-year-old registered 10 duels won, seven tackles won, four recoveries, two completed long passes, two completed crosses, two clearances, two chances created, and completed nearly 94% of his passes.

D - Jordan Skelton, One Knoxville SC: The 2023 USL League One Defender of the Year finalist captained Knoxville to an unbeaten, four-point Week 24. Through 180 minutes, Skelton provided 12 clearances, nine completed long passes, eight duels won, six recoveries, five blocks, and completed nearly 88% of his passes. Skelton led all defenders with a 0.58 goals-added value in Week 24, per American Soccer Analysis.

M - Luis Álvarez, Charlotte Independence: The Jacks' 21-year-old talent continued to build upon his career-best campaign, scoring once in Charlotte's 2-2 draw against Lexington. The Honduran added seven duels won, seven recoveries, four tackles won, and completed over 70% of his passes.

M - José Carrera-García, Central Valley Fuego FC: Carrera-García guided Central Valley to an impressive one-win, one-loss week with an assist and a week-best seven total chances created. The 2022 USL League One All-League First Team midfielder added 14 recoveries, eight duels won, six completed crosses, four fouls won, three interceptions and an 86% passing completion rate across 180 minutes of action. Carrera-García led all players with a 0.61 goals-added value in Week 24, per American Soccer Analysis.

M - Callum Johnson, One Knoxville SC: One Knox's all-time appearances leader provided the assist on Stávros Zarokóstas' opening score and added nine duels won, eight recoveries, four total chances created, two clearances and a 85% passing completion rate across 162 minutes.

M - Chandler O'Dwyer, Richmond Kickers: O'Dwyer has continued to bolster his career-best season, notching Richmond's opening goal against Chattanooga. The 25-year-old won 12 duels, reeled in six recoveries, won five fouls, recorded three clearances, created two chances and completed over 90% of his passes to help the Kickers lock up the final postseason berth. 

M - Max Schneider, Union Omaha: The Bayer 04 Leverkusen academy product and Indy Eleven loanee dished out the winning assist in the 90th minute to help Omaha confirm its third USL League One Players' Shield. The 24-year-old German registered 12 duels won, seven fouls won, four recoveries, four total chances created, three interceptions, and completed over 88% of his passes.

F - Dembor Benson, Central Valley Fuego FC: Benson scored the late winner in Central Valley's upset against Greenville to provide Fuego FC its first victory against Triumph SC since the pair's first meeting in March 2022. The former El Farolito goalscorer totaled 13 duels won, two recoveries and two chances created through 116 minutes of play.
